It may sound like a good idea to quote as many sources as possible to make sure you’re getting a cheap price, but at the end of the day it may end up costing you more.
We have seen many shippers with their “systems” of quoting 10+ logistics sources. Although it may look efficient and cost effective for the shipper, the “system” can end up working against you as it’s more time consuming, confusing, and, often not realized, you’re putting you and your customer at risk. The old saying, you have three choices and can only pick two; fast, cheap, quality (service). From our experience, we have found shippers who utilize too many sources for logistics like the fast and cheap. Among all of those stories, they share a horror story or two regarding former or current sources.
Going for an abundance of sources will cost you to spend time and resources filtering and keeping track of every quote you receive. You will also have to compare each quote side-by-side taking into account multiple factors besides just cost. We have even seen clients still quoting with sources they tell us they’ll never use.
Not all vendors are built the same and this is where the biggest risk factor comes in. What if a shipment gets delayed or damaged? Are all of your 10+ logistics sources tracking and tracing your shipment? Are they being proactive to issues and potential additional fees and costs? If something gets damaged, will the carriers pay out with integrity or will they fight any claim? If something gets lost/damaged, that’s more time and money to get a replacement sent out while your customer waits and grows impatient at your service. Yes, a carrier is sort of an extension of your brand. So is your logistics source: are they helpful while properly representing you and your company?
Finding reputable vendors is a difficult task but once you’re over that hurdle you will have to ensure that all

vendors remain consistently reliable which opens the problem of a revolving door of logistics sources. This is a relationship-based industry and if you don’t have the proper relationship with your logistics sources than you won’t get that personal care that many of our clients appreciate from us. That is why we no longer work with clients that quote with so many sources. We have had clients go with us even when our cost is a little more than our competition because they value the service we bring.
We recommend two or three sources at the most. However, as soon as you find the right sources, you can gain the trust that they’re getting you a fair market price while giving you a level of service that exceed your expectations. In the end it’s easier, more time-efficient, and less trouble to only work with minimal trusted sources. You’ll be enjoying an efficiently streamlined and optimized shipping experience your customers will appreciate.
