We have been in the industry long enough to know we have NOT seen it all, nor will we ever. Usually when something goes wrong, it ALL goes wrong. We know the pain and frustration when a routine shipment becomes a nightmare that refuses to quit. What can you do when this happens? The short answer: there is nothing you can do once it happens but that’s where we come in. A tip to help you sleep better at night: be sure your freight is properly insured. But wait, you might say, there’s carrier liability…why would I want to spend money for additional insurance? Good question! However, if you’ve ever had to file for a damage or missing item with a carrier, you know it’s a long, drawn out and (often enough) disappointing process.

It often takes weeks to have carriers look at a claim and paying it out can sometimes be something as little as a $1 per pound. Not ok when you have a $3000 item that weighs 200lbs. Carriers liability is based on the NMFC and the classification of the item that was shipped. We’ve had claims go for months before we received a final settlement and, in many cases, they’re not what our client wanted but per the NMFC rule and tariff, it is an accurate settlement.Carrier liability is not the same as insurance. If your freight is only covered by carrier liability coverage, you have 9 months to file your claim.
· The delivery receipt must include notice of damage
· Proof of value and proof of loss is required
· The carrier has 30 days to acknowledge your claim and must respond within 120 days
· Carrier negligence must be proven
If your shipment is covered by freight insurance:
· Proof of value and proof of loss is required
· Claims are typically paid within 30 days
· You are not required to prove carrier negligence
Just like any other insurance situation, carrier liability coverage and freight insurance can be complicated as each carrier has its own liability policies. Our freight insurance option comes with its own limitations. Items such as precious metals and stones, aircraft, automobiles, live animals, neon items, currency, jewelry (valued $1,000 or more per piece), flowers & plants.
We are a freight consulting/brokerage service company and are not a licensed insurance broker/company. This means that we are not profiting off of these insurance rates. When freight is properly insured, it can cut so much wasted time and energy as it is just a simple and easy process to file a claim and have it resolved within 30-60 days.
