December

Hello, we hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. Please note that we will be closed 12/24-12/25 and 12/31-01/01. Unfortunately, for the first time ever, Todd will not be making his usual visit for the holidays and will be sending out cards instead. We are hoping this is the first and last time, as we miss visiting with you.

If Carriers Have Limited Liability; Why Buy Insurance For Freight?

We have been in the industry long enough to know we have NOT seen it all, nor will we ever. Usually when something goes wrong, it ALL goes wrong. We know the pain and frustration when a routine shipment becomes a nightmare that refuses to quit. What can you do when this happens? The short answer: there is nothing you can do once it happens but that’s where we come in. A tip to help you sleep better at night: be sure your freight is properly insured. But wait, you might say, there’s carrier liability…why would I want to spend money for additional insurance? Good question! However, if you’ve ever had to file for a damage or missing item with a carrier, you know it’s a long, drawn out and (often enough) disappointing process.

It often takes weeks to have carriers look at a claim and paying it out can sometimes be something as little as a $1 per pound. Not ok when you have a $3000 item that weighs 200lbs. Carriers liability is based on the NMFC and the classification of the item that was shipped. We’ve had claims go for months before we received a final settlement and, in many cases, they’re not what our client wanted but per the NMFC rule and tariff, it is an accurate settlement.Carrier liability is not the same as insurance. If your freight is only covered by carrier liability coverage, you have 9 months to file your claim.
·         The delivery receipt must include notice of damage
·         Proof of value and proof of loss is required
·         The carrier has 30 days to acknowledge your claim and must respond within 120 days
·         Carrier negligence must be proven
If your shipment is covered by freight insurance:
·         Proof of value and proof of loss is required
·         Claims are typically paid within 30 days
·         You are not required to prove carrier negligence

Just like any other insurance situation, carrier liability coverage and freight insurance can be complicated as each carrier has its own liability policies. Our freight insurance option comes with its own limitations. Items such as precious metals and stones, aircraft, automobiles, live animals, neon items, currency, jewelry (valued $1,000 or more per piece), flowers & plants.

We are a freight consulting/brokerage service company and are not a licensed insurance broker/company. This means that we are not profiting off of these insurance rates. When freight is properly insured, it can cut so much wasted time and energy as it is just a simple and easy process to file a claim and have it resolved within 30-60 days.

If you have questions like “how much does freight insurance cost?” or “what does freight insurance cover?”, or if you just want to learn more, call us at 888-666-3203.

ABOUT THE TEAM

We hope everyone is having a happy holiday season. We want to thank all our clients for their support this year. This year has been difficult for so many and we were doing business plans and goal setting no further than 30 days ahead. We made it through this year relatively unscathed and we are so thankful for that, our team, corporate support, you and the rest of our clients!

Our ‘About the Team’ includes you the client as we work so close with many of you that without proper communication from you, our team would be extremely limited with their success when handling your freight and of any issues that come up. We want to show appreciation for your continued support and patience during this difficult and unprecedented time.

We look forward to working with you in 2021!!!
