Understanding Shipping Lanes
You may have noticed that shipments coming into Florida may have higher rates than a similar shipment coming out of Florida.
Florida is a unique area to ship in and out from as it is mostly geographically isolated. It also does not have a particularly heavy manufacturing and production industry (other than produce). It is because of this and the international exporting industry that causes the change in price. There are roughly 10 loaded inbound trailers for every 1 loaded outbound trailer. Most trailers will leave the Florida area empty, so rates are more competitive on the outbound as carriers struggle to fill their trailers just to cover the cost.
Every part of the country has its own niche as well as its own issues. The Northeast is very competitive because the population density is so compact. There are long hauls from California to New York that some carriers do well and for a decent rate. There are lanes that aren’t good for nearly any carrier as they will go to that area once or twice a week only. Delays can be expected so it’s important to know your carriers and lanes.
About the team
Mark will be in South Florida at the beginning of February. We will be working together in the office as well as stopping by to see as many of our clients as we can.

Mark is a diehard Syracuse University fan. We will be attending the NCAA basketball game when University Miami hosts Syracuse on January 25th, 2014.
