As with most things in the freight industry, finding a clear answer for this question can be difficult to navigate. Each carrier has different levels of coverage for different commodities and for different classes.
For instance, AAA Cooper will pay out a maximum of $20/lb for items classified between class 70 and class 125. For used items, they will only pay out 10 cents per pound. For class 50 items, they will pay $.99/lb. Roadrunner, on the other hand, has a max payout of $10/lb, only on classes 50-60, and only on specific lanes. In most cases, they will be paying out $1-2/lb for most shipments. That is fairly consistent with most consolidators – something to remember when shipping freight that is fragile and/or valuable.
While not every carrier has exactly the same payouts, this is a good general rule of thumb to follow. Most carriers will pay out only $.10/lb for used freight, and many have varying levels of coverage. Most low class commodities will have a lower per pound payout, and most higher classed items will have a higher per pound payout. For instance, YRC pays out $2/lb for a class 50 item, $16/lb for a class 110 item, and $25/lb for a class 400 item.
This is what one should consider when quoting their freight. If you have a very valuable shipment that is only a class 60 item, we strongly encourage you into adding insurance to cover the full value and make sure you (and your customer), is covered.
