Reweighs and Deficit Reweighs
As we all come to know, reweighs are an unfortunate inevitability in the LTL world. Carriers at times, will charge for a reweigh on a shipment that you are certain was correct in the first place. We know that carriers can and do get things wrong and we are here to help and assist you with any disputes including reweighs. As always, it is very important to have documents which support your claim. Packing lists, picking sheets, a product catalog and a link to the product’s website can all be very useful when disputing a reweigh.
What happens when something weighs less than was quoted?
Occasionally one will receive a re-bill for a “Deficit Weight Charge.” Deficit weight is the difference between actual weight and the next pricing break (i.e. 1000#). This is actually used to make the price cheaper. Look at it like jumping up a tax bracket but then paying less in taxes. Ninety percent of carriers do not include this as a line item. It happens constantly but you may never see it. To give a very loose example, let’s say you quoted something at 487 pounds. The carrier reweighs it to 500 pounds and you receive a ‘Deficit Weight’ re-bill for $18. An $18 ‘Deficit Weight Charge’ actually saves you money by considering it a 500 pound item, instead of 487 pound. It can be cheaper to ship something at 500 pounds at one class than it would be 13 pounds less at the same class!
